Chronic short staffing endangers patient safety
Chicago, Illinois (NED).– Workers at Loretto, St. Bernard and Roseland hospitals are sounding the alarm on dangerously low staffing levels and inadequate wages as the Chicago safety net hospitals stonewall workers at the bargaining table. On Thursday, July 20, frontline hospital workers will rally across from Roseland Hospital to demand the three safety net hospitals address the dangerous staffing crisis by integrating stronger staffing language in contract negotiations.
This action comes the day after workers delivered a 10-day strike notice in front of Loretto Hospital. Carrying larger-than-life signs blaring “Safety Net Strong” and a large “blowing the whistle on short staffing” graphic, hospital workers will share their stories working in some of Illinois’s busiest hospitals and highlight the urgent need to invest in the hospitals serving the communities that are often most in need of services. The term “safety net” refers to hospitals that provide healthcare and critical services to low-income communities. Many patients at these hospitals are either enrolled in Medicaid or lack insurance coverage altogether.
“It is the joy of my life to be able to care for those who need it most, but lately, we’re so understaffed that I can’t give my patients the quality care they deserve,” said Tamara Phillips, RN at Roseland Hospital. “Every day, I am constantly running from patient to patient, trying my best to keep up with high demand while doing the job of three people. We need safe staffing at our safety net hospitals now.”
Frontline service, care and technical workers at Loretto Hospital delivered a 10-day strike notice on Wednesday and held a press conference where they shared how management has left them with no other choice but to strike after failing to address substandard wages and the urgent need for safe staffing at the bargaining table. Over multiple months of bargaining, management at Loretto Hospital has yet to address these core issues and additional demands including the addition of Juneteenth as a holiday.
The strike will begin on July 31 and is set to last until Loretto management is able to reach an agreement with the union. The striking workers would include patient transporters, patient care technicians, emergency room technicians, mental health and behavioral health workers, respiratory and radiology technicians, housekeeping workers, and others.
Flanked by signs blaring “Safety Net Strong; READY TO STRIKE” and a banner reading “#STRIKEREADY,” workers gathered outside Loretto Hospital and shared stories about how substandard wages drive short-staffing, increase worker burnout and leave workers caring for far more patients than one person possibly can.
