Cicero, Illinois (NED).– Con el deseo de educar a los jóvenes en el área de Chicago sobre cómo “encaminarse” con una posible carrera en el ferrocarril, el patio intermodal de BNSF en Cicero, recientemente organizó un día de carrera y un recorrido por el patio para los visitantes del Boys Club of Cicero.
Durante el día y la gira profesional de BNSF, los muchachos conocieron a los empleados de BNSF y aprendieron sobre una amplia gama de oportunidades profesionales: operaciones ferroviarias, control de tráfico, seguridad pública, recursos humanos y relaciones gubernamentales.
“Esta fue una valiosa oportunidad para que los jóvenes del vecindario consideraran una carrera en la industria ferroviaria”, dijo Patricia Figueroa, ingeniera de locomotoras y presidenta del Consejo de Diversidad de Chicago de BNSF, aquí mismo les enseñamos desde operar la terminal ferroviaria hasta controlar el tráfico y conducir un montacargas, todo mientras aprenden sobre la gran cantidad de oportunidades en la industria que tal vez no sabían que existían, todo esto fue en el patio trasero”.
El Senador Estatal de Illinois, Javier L. Cervantes, se unió al grupo para el recorrido por el jardín. Juntos observaron cómo BNSF coordina la entrega segura, eficiente y sostenible de productos básicos agrícolas, carbón, bienes de consumo y productos industriales a través de Cicero y más allá. También escucharon sobre la historia de la empresa en la zona, donde BNSF tiene presencia desde hace más de 100 años.
Javier López, miembro del Boys Club y estudiante de último año en Morton East High School participó en la gira. “Es increíble lo grande que es el ferrocarril en nuestra comunidad”, dijo. “Nunca hubiera pensado lo grande que es si no fuera porque se tomaron el tiempo para mostrarnos el lugar. Hay tantas piezas en su empresa que hacen que funcione tan bien que hacen que parezca fácil”.
Cervantes agradeció a BNSF por albergar a su equipo y al Boys Club. “BNSF y sus empleados que participan en el sistema ferroviario complejo pero clave nos guiaron en un recorrido por la vía férrea que ilustra el papel fundamental que desempeña en el transporte de mercancías para la comunidad de Cicero y el estado de Illinois”.
Peter Skosey, director ejecutivo de Asuntos Públicos de BNSF en Illinois, ayudó a organizar la gira. “Esperamos continuar la asociación con el Boys Club of Cicero y apoyaremos la misión del Club: ‘Permitir que todos los jóvenes alcancen su máximo potencial como residentes productivos, solidarios y responsables’”, dijo. “En BNSF, nos enorgullece transportar carga crítica para la nación y conectarnos con personas y comunidades en el camino”.
El Boys Club of Cicero ha estado sirviendo a la comunidad desde 1950. El club ofrece actividades seguras para sus miembros con el objetivo principal de mantener a los niños enfocados en graduarse de la escuela secundaria y luego ir a la universidad.
Esta fue la segunda vez que BNSF y el Boys Club de Cicero se reunieron. Durante las vacaciones, los empleados locales se fueron de compras con 20 niños. Ambas organizaciones esperan tener más eventos en el futuro.
“Estoy muy entusiasmado con nuestra asociación con BNSF”, dijo Edgar Montiel, director ejecutivo de Boys Club of Cicero. “Abre tantas oportunidades para nuestros jóvenes de secundaria y los expone a las infinitas oportunidades que BNSF tiene para ofrecer.”
Cabe mencionar que el Boys Club of Cicero esta ubicado a pocas cuadras del patio de BNSF.

BNSF Representatives Meet with Cicero Boys Club Youth
Cicero, Ill. (NED) – With a desire to educate young people in the Chicago area about how to “get on track” with a potential career in railroading, BNSF’s Cicero Intermodal Yard recently hosted a career day and yard tour for visitors from the Boys Club of Cicero.
During the BNSF career day and tour, the boys met BNSF employees and learned about a wide range of career opportunities: railroad operations, traffic control, public safety, human resources and government relations.
“This was a valuable opportunity for neighborhood youth to consider a career in the railroad industry,” said Patricia Figueroa, locomotive engineer and chair of BNSF’s Chicago Diversity Council, “Right here we taught them everything from operating the rail terminal to traffic control to driving a forklift, all while learning about the many opportunities in the industry that they may not have known existed, all in their backyard.
Illinois State Senator Javier L. Cervantes joined the group for the garden tour. Together they observed how BNSF coordinates the safe, efficient and sustainable delivery of agricultural commodities, coal, consumer goods and industrial products throughout Cicero and beyond. They also heard about the company’s history in the area, where BNSF has had a presence for more than 100 years.
Javier Lopez, a Boys Club member and senior at Morton East High School participated in the tour. “It’s amazing how big the railroad is in our community,” he said. “I never would have thought how big it is if it wasn’t for them taking the time to show us around. There are so many pieces to their company that make it work so well that they make it look easy.”
Cervantes thanked BNSF for hosting his team and the Boys Club. “BNSF and its employees involved in the complex but key rail system led us on a tour of the railroad that illustrates the critical role it plays in the transportation of goods for the Cicero community and the state of Illinois.”
Peter Skosey, executive director of Public Affairs for BNSF in Illinois, helped organize the tour. “We look forward to continuing the partnership with the Boys Club of Cicero and will support the Club’s mission: ‘To enable all young people to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible residents,'” he said. “At BNSF, we take pride in hauling critical cargo for the nation and connecting with people and communities along the way.”
The Boys Club of Cicero has been serving the community since 1950. The club provides safe activities for its members with the primary goal of keeping kids focused on graduating from high school and then going on to college.
This was the second time BNSF and the Boys Club of Cicero met. During the vacations, local employees went shopping with 20 kids. Both organizations hope to have more events in the future.
“I’m very excited about our partnership with BNSF,” said Edgar Montiel, executive director of Boys Club of Cicero. “It opens up so many opportunities for our high school youth and exposes them to the endless opportunities BNSF has to offer.”
Of note, the Boys Club of Cicero is located just a few blocks from the BNSF playground.
