Vanessa Nieto una Latina exitosa
Chicago, Illinois (NED) El EV Rally de ComEd, anteriormente conocido como Icebox Derby, es lo más destacado del verano para mujeres jóvenes en el área de Chicago. El evento ofrece a mujeres jovenes, de 13 a 18 años, la oportunidad de aplicar los principios de ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería y matemáticas (STEM) para construir y competir en karts eléctricos.
Brindando a las participantes oportunidades de tutoría y $2,000 en becas para mejorar su educación STEM, EV Rally ha resultado en varias historias de éxito, incluyendo la de la ingeniera asociada de ComEd, Vanessa Nieto.
Como ingeniera del equipo de análisis de red de ComEd y participante anterior del Icebox Derby en 2017, Vanessa reconoce que el evento ayudó a desarrollar una pasión por la ingeniería, pero también agradece a su familia y sus raíces latinas.
Vanessa resalta en entrevista lo feliz que está, el agradecimiento que siente hacia sus padres y envía un consejo a otros chicos y chicas como ella: “Como estudiante hispana de primera generación, sé que mis padres sacrificaron mucho para que nosotros estemos aquí hoy”, dijo Vanessa, “así que siempre quiero asegurarme de aprovechar las oportunidades que se me brindan y alentar a mi comunidad hispana a hacer lo mismo. Siempre digo: ‘No tengas miedo de desafiarte a ti mismo solo porque no ves a muchas personas que se parecen a ti'”.

EV Rally Participant Becomes ComEd Engineer

Chicago, Illinois (NED) ComEd’s EV Rally, formerly known as the Icebox Derby, is the highlight of the summer for young women in the Chicago area. The event offers women, ages 13-18, the opportunity to apply science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) principles to build and race electric go-karts.
Providing participants with mentoring opportunities and $2,000 in scholarships to further their STEM education, EV Rally has resulted in several success stories, including that of ComEd associate engineer Vanessa Nieto.
As an engineer on ComEd’s network analytics team and a previous Icebox Derby participant in 2017, Vanessa acknowledges that the event helped develop a passion for engineering, but also thanks her family and her Latino roots.
Vanessa highlights in interview how happy she is, how grateful she is to her parents and sends advice to other guys and girls like her, “As a first-generation Hispanic student, I know my parents sacrificed a lot for us to be here today,” Vanessa said, “so I always want to make sure I take advantage of the opportunities given to me and encourage my Hispanic community to do the same. I always say, ‘Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself just because you don’t see a lot of people who look like you.
