El superintendente de la policía de Chicago, Larry Snelling, dijo el martes que los inmigrantes que permanecen en las delegaciones de la ciudad han creado una “carga” para los agentes policiacos, informó The Associated Press.
El Departamento de Policía de Chicago (CPD) actualmente alberga a un total de 3.000 inmigrantes en sus delegaciones de toda la ciudad, y muchos de ellos duermen en espacios reducidos encima de cajas de cartón o colchones colocados en las entradas de las comisarías, según AP. Snelling, quien se convirtió en superintendente a fines de septiembre, expresó su preocupación de que la cantidad de migrantes disuadiría a las víctimas de delitos que querían presentar un informe policial en la estación, y también afectaría la forma en que los agentes podrían continuar luchando contra el crimen en Chicago.
“Fuimos los primeros en abrir nuestras puertas a los migrantes y todavía siguen llegando. Y no los hemos rechazado”, dijo Snelling a la AP. “Pero lo que necesitamos es que otras personas den un paso al frente en estas situaciones porque la carga de albergar a las personas ha recaído en el departamento de policía”.
“Me preocupa el bienestar de los agentes que ven estas condiciones todos los días porque se preocupan por seres humanos”, añadió.
Chicago se ha enfrentado a una afluencia de inmigrantes en 2023: recibió 7.000 inmigrantes solo de Texas y acogió a más de 13.000 en total. Los residentes y políticos locales han criticado los esfuerzos del alcalde demócrata de Chicago, Brandon Johnson, por acoger a más inmigrantes en toda la ciudad en edificios públicos y escuelas vacías.
La inmigración ilegal alcanzó niveles históricos en el año fiscal 2023, y los agentes de Aduanas y Patrulla Fronteriza (CBP) registraron 1,8 millones de encuentros con inmigrantes ilegales entre octubre de 2022 y agosto.
CPD se negó a hacer más comentarios sobre el asunto. La oficina del alcalde de Chicago no respondió de inmediato a la solicitud de comentarios de la Daily Caller News Foundation.

Larry Snelling says sheltering immigrants in precincts is a “burden” for Chicago police officers
Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said on Tuesday that the migrants staying at police stations in the city have created a “burden” for officers, The Associated Press reported.
The Chicago Police Department (CPD) currently hosts 3,000 total immigrants at its police stations throughout the city, with many migrants sleeping in close quarters on top of cardboard boxes or mattresses placed in the stations’ entryways, according to the AP. Snelling, who became superintendent at the end of September, expressed concern that the number of migrants would deter crime victims who wanted to submit a police report at the station, and would also impact how well officers could continue to fight crime in Chicago.
“We were the first to open our doors to the migrants and they’re still coming. And we have not turned them away,” Snelling told the AP. “But what we need are other people to step up in these situations because the burden has been on the police department to house people.”
“I do worry about the wellness of officers who see these conditions every single day because they’re concerned human beings,” he added.
Chicago has faced an influx of migrants in 2023, receiving 7,000 migrants from Texas alone and hosting over 13,000 total. Residents and local politicians have criticized Democratic Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s efforts to host more migrants across the city in public buildings and empty schools.
Illegal immigration reached historic levels in fiscal year 2023, with Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents recording 1.8 million encounters with illegal immigrants between October 2022 and August.
CPD declined to comment further on the matter. The Chicago mayor’s office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
