Cicero, Illinois (NED).– Israel Hernández, pastor principal de la Iglesia del Buen Pastor en Cicero, IL., dá a conocer a la comunidad a través de EL DIA Newspaper que el 2 de julio de 2023, la Iglesia del Buen Pastor fue víctima de una pérdida devastadora debido a una cantidad de lluvia sin precedentes que causó daños significativos al Fellowship/Community Hall, que ha sido un símbolo de unidad y un lugar de reunión para el trabajo que hacemos en la comunidad.
“Sufrimos daños significativos en nuestros pisos, todas las paredes y también en nuestros útiles escolares que habíamos recolectado durante todo el año para nuestra 18ª Feria Anual de Regreso a la Escuela en la que entregamos útiles escolares y ropa gratis a los niños de nuestra comunidad que están en necesidad… Nuestras pérdidas no reembolsadas suman más de $25,000.”
La tasa de pobreza es de aproximadamente el 18%, que es 1,5 veces la tasa de Illinois, el 45% de los hogares están dirigidos por un solo padre, y el 80% de esos hogares informan que se habla español en el hogar.
Nuestra iglesia de hoy no es diferente a las de años pasados cuando los necesitados buscaban ayuda en la iglesia. Recuerdo que el año pasado una niña como de 12 años estaba con su hermanito y estaban sentados frente a la puerta de la iglesia cuando llegamos a prepararnos para la Feria de Regreso a Clases. Le pregunté: “¿Por qué estás aquí tan temprano?”, ella respondió: “…..no queríamos perdernos de llevar nuestros útiles escolares”. Por supuesto, abrimos nuestras puertas, ¡y ellos fueron los primeros destinatarios!
Ahora, debido a 25,000 dólares en pérdidas no reembolsadas, nuestra pequeña iglesia siente la crisis. Con nuestra asistencia y ofertas post-covid reducidas, nos vemos obligados a desviar una gran parte de los recursos hacia la mitigación y la restauración para que el moho no abarque nuestro Fellowship/Community Hall.

Good Shepherd Church asks for your help
Cicero, Illinois (NED).– Israel Hernandez, senior pastor of Good Shepherd Church in Cicero, IL, let the community know by way EL DIA Newspaper that on July 2, 2023, Good Shepherd Church was the victim of a devastating loss due to an unprecedented amount of rain that caused significant damage to the Fellowship/Community Hall, which has been a symbol of unity and a gathering place for the work we do in the community.
“We suffered significant damage to our floors, all the walls and also to our school supplies that we had collected throughout the year for our 18th Annual Back to School Fair where we give out free school supplies and clothing to children in our community who are in need…. Our unreimbursed losses total more than $25,000.”
The poverty rate is approximately 18%, which is 1.5 times the Illinois rate, 45% of households are headed by a single parent, and 80% of those households report that Spanish is spoken in the home.
Our church today is no different than those of years past when those in need looked to the church for help. I remember last year a little girl about 12 years old was with her little brother and they were sitting in front of the church door when we came to prepare for the Back to School Fair. I asked her, “Why are you here so early?” she replied, “….. we didn’t want to miss bringing our school supplies.” Of course, we opened our doors, and they were the first recipients!
Now, due to $25,000 in unreimbursed losses, our little church is feeling the crunch. With our attendance and post-covid offerings reduced, we are forced to divert a large portion of resources toward mitigation and restoration so that mold does not encompass our Fellowship/Community Hall.
