Washington, DC — Hoy, mientras el país conmemora el aniversario del violento ataque contra el Capitolio Federal, el Sierra Club de nuevo urge al Senado a proteger y reforzar la democracia aprobando la Ley de Libertad para Votar, la Ley John Lewis de Avance de los Derechos del Votante (VRAA) y la Ley de Protección de la Democracia Estadounidense.
Estas cruciales leyes contrarrestarían los cientos de proyectos de ley estatales que de otra manera impedirían que millones de personas voten en las elecciones venideras, establecerían más controles democráticos, evitarían el abuso del poder presidencial como vimos con la administración Trump, y prevendrían intentos futuros de socavar y atacar el proceso electoral.
Una encuesta de Navigator realizada el año pasado reveló que la mayoría de los estadounidenses apoya la Ley de Libertad para Votar, y más de dos de cada tres apoya cada cláusula de la legislación. El 70% de los votantes apoya la VRAA, según un sondeo realizado por Lake Reseach en 2021.
El Presidente del Sierra Club, Ramón Cruz, emitió la siguiente declaración al respecto: “Un año tras que supremacistas blancos casi destruyeran los cimientos de nuestra democracia en un intento de amañar unas elecciones libres y justas, el Senado aún no ha aprobado reformas significativas para asegurarse de que nunca más vuelva a ocurrir una insurrección violenta.
“Ya basta. La Ley de Libertad para Votar y la Ley John Lewis de Avance de los Derechos del Votante representan la mejor oportunidad para proteger y reforzar fundamentalmente nuestra democracia, pero ambos proyectos están estancados en el Senado debido al obstruccionismo de la minoría republicana.
“El público estadounidense exige actuar para proteger los derechos del votante, abordar la crisis climática y salvaguardar las comunidades del país. Aprobando estas dos leyes, nuestro país estará más cerca que nunca de alcanzar esas metas. El Sierra Club urge al Senado a aprobar de inmediato la Ley de Libertad para Votar y la Ley John Lewis de Avance de los Derechos del Votante”.

On the Anniversary of the Insurrection, it is important to approve the law on freedom to vote
Washington, DC.– Today, as the country marks the one-year anniversary of the violent attack on the US Capitol, the Sierra Club again calls on the Senate to protect and strengthen our democracy by passing the Freedom to Vote Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (VRAA), and the Protect Our Democracy Act.
These critical federal laws will preempt the hundreds of bad state bills that could otherwise keep millions of people from voting in upcoming elections, put in place more checks and balances, prevent presidential abuse of power as we saw under the Trump administration, and prevent future attempts to undermine and attack our elections.
A Navigator poll conducted late last year found that a majority of Americans support the Freedom to Vote Act, and more than two in three support each provision in the legislation. The VRAA is supported by 70% of voters nationwide, according to a survey conducted by Lake Research in 2021.
In response, Sierra Club President Ramon Cruz issued the following statement:
“A full year after white supremacists nearly destroyed the bedrock of our democracy in an attempt to overturn a free and fair election, the Senate has still not passed meaningful reforms to ensure a violent insurrection never occurs again.
“Enough is enough. The landmark Freedom To Vote Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act represent the best chance to fundamentally strengthen and protect our democracy, yet both bills are currently stalled in the Senate by the Republican minority.
“The American people are demanding action to protect voting rights, tackle the climate crisis, and safeguard our communities, and by passing these two bills, our country will be closer than ever before in achieving those goals. The Sierra Club calls on the Senate to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act immediately.”
