Berwyn seeks leadership, vision and action
Berwyn, Illinois (NED).- Alicia Ruiz, alderwoman for Berwyn’s 6th district made it known through EL DIA Newspaper’s social page that in 2020, she proposed that she along with elected officials, direct the Berwyn Development Corporation to create an Economic Development Plan for Cermak Road. Unfortunately, the plan was rejected and shot down immediately during the council meeting. However, I felt it provided a vision for revitalizing Cermak Road.
Ruiz writes: Did you know that Cermak Road is our busiest corridor? According to the Illinois Department of Transportation
https://www.gettingaroundillinois.com/Traffic%20Counts/index.html, between 30,000 and 33,000 drivers pass through Berwyn every day. Can you imagine if 1% of those drivers spent their money in our community, what that could do for our finances?
In Berwyn, we’re missing the mark when it comes to our commercial business. We don’t have a strategic plan. We are not intentional about the businesses that our community really needs and wants.
Ruiz goes on to write “we have the potential to create dynamic corridors like on Lake Street in Oak Park or downtown LaGrange, but it takes leadership, vision and action.
In 2023, I initiated a partnership with UIC’s School of Urban Planning and Policy to explore a revitalization plan for Cermak Road, says Councilmember Ruiz. UIC to explore a revitalization plan for Cermak Road, says Councilwoman Ruiz. I’ve already started the planning, let’s finish it together! The plan was presented to State Representative Abdelnasser Rashid, State Senator Mike Porfirio and myself to put this vision into action. I want to continue to build on that momentum and create a Berwyn that works for everyone.
In Berwyn, it’s time to think big, plan smarter and act with purpose. We want a city that thrives, not just survives.

Berwyn will have an election next Tuesday, February 25, Alicia Ruiz is running for the office of Mayor of Berwyn. Rafael Avila is also seeking the mayor’s seat, both of Hispanic origin, against Berwyn’s current mayor, Robert J. Lovero, who is seeking re-election.
Lovero has faced disagreements in his last term in office, particularly with the large Hispanic community of residents and business owners. The biggest annoyance is that the staff at City Hall does not contribute or facilitate the services that are requested. Complaints have been echoed at government meetings, yet adequate changes have not been made. The Berwyn administration needs to act and support everyone.
