Más de la mitad destinada a CPD, ISP
Chicago, Illinois (NED).– El secretario de Estado de Illinois, Alexi Giannoulias, anunció este jueves $21 millones en subvenciones a los departamentos de policía y grupos de trabajo en todo el estado en un esfuerzo por frenar un aumento de tres años en los robos de vehículos a mano armada.
Más de la mitad de esa financiación total está destinada a la Policía Estatal de Illinois y al Departamento de Policía de Chicago, ya que la ciudad se enfrenta a una de las cifras más altas de robos de vehículos vistos en al menos una generación.
En conferencia de prensa para anunciar la subvención, Giannoulias dijo: “Estios robos están destruyendo comunidades”, “están provocando que la gente abandone el estado, haciendo que la gente cuestione poner a sus hijos en el asiento trasero. Lo mismo puede ocurrir a las 10 de la mañana o a las 2 de la tarde”.

Casi la mitad del total de la subvención (casi $10,3 millones) se destinará al Grupo de aplicación de la seguridad en las autopistas de la policía estatal de Illinois, mientras que alrededor de $1,5 millones se destinarán a la unidad de investigaciones de robos importantes de automóviles del Departamento de Policía de Chicago.

Over half of total funding earmarked for CPD, ISP
Chicago, Illinois (NED).– Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias on Thursday announced $21 million in grants to police departments and task forces across the state in an effort to tamp down on a three-year surge in armed carjackings.
More than half of that total funding is earmarked for the Illinois State Police and the Chicago Police Department as the city grapples with some of the highest numbers of carjackings seen in at least a generation.
At a news conference to announce the grant, Giannoulias said: “These robberies are destroying communities,” “they’re causing people to leave the state, making people question putting their children in the back seat of their car. The same thing can happen at 10am in the morning or at 2pm in the afternoon.”
“We want to give law enforcement every resource we can to help identify and prosecute these criminals,” said Giannoulias, the first-term Democrat elected last year to replace the long-serving former Secretary of State Jesse White.
Almost half the grant total – nearly $10.3 million – will go to the Illinois State Police Expressway Safety Enforcement Group, while about $1.5 million is going to the Chicago Police Department’s Major Auto Theft Investigations unit.
